My Week with Marilyn - Movie Review

My Week With Marilyn to me had a sense of charm about it. Watching other Marilyn movies before this they all had some way of leaving a bad taste in my mouth. They over dramatize or fictionalize the negative flaws that they think we want to see. This film did rather the opposite. It tip toed and showed glimpses into the flaws in her life. We don't see her slurring her words after a glass of champagne before falling down and hanging over men, upon which countless movies have done. We see her laughing, flirting, weeping, showing hints of her sexuality and insecurities. We also see the behind the scenes and what it was like to feel pressure and wanting to be sure of yourself before going on set. Michelle might not remind anyone of Marilyn but looking at the context rather was my main concern. How was the film going to portray her? I was apprehensive waiting for a movie that tells about a wild affair with a young boy in England. This wasn't that movie rather it played with the fact they we do feel for Marilyn (this being channeled through Colin). We want to help her, we want to care for her, some can relate to her and yet she is always out of reach. I wouldn't say I LOVED it but I liked it. I wasn't offended by it in anyway and it left me with a sense of contentment. I rather have this movie shown to this generation rather than the other movies. But I did not like how it keeps saying this is a true story. There are countless people saying they did this and that with Marilyn and credibility is low nowadays. However, the story was enough to show an experience rather than a tell all fame deal. Is this the best Marilyn movie so far, I would say yes. Is this the best movie about Marilyn, no. I still am holding out hope some day a movie will be done to show her whole life in a way that creates even deeper appreciate for Marilyn and what makes her the way she is. But we might never have that movie, so in the mean time this will have to do.
I give it *** out of 4 stars.

I know I haven't been blogging for a while but I thought I would post about the recent play I just watched. When I heard a Marilyn play was coming I jumped at the chance. I didn't know what to expect even though Melinda from the Marilyn podcast said it was good you never really know. I will say the play was good. You had the chance to see what it was like in Marilyns bedroom talking about her life. There is mention of sex and quotes from others that knew her. It does have jokes but is also tragic. If your expecting just all musical happy numbers this isn't your play. Although all the facts were accurate I think the mention of Joan Crawford and her so called affair could have been left out. I havent seen facts to support this statement. Even though this was a good play I think it could have been better to see Norma Jeans side. To sympathize with Marilyn more they should have showed how Norma was awkward, shy, had a stutter, and didn't really like sex. How Hollywood made her sacrifice the person she knew for a "better" more excepting life. We heard it from Marilyn's mouth but didn't see what Norma Jean thought. But I did appreciate knowing that they knew they did their homework. You can tell they did a lot of research to tell her story. You can easily mess up Marilyns life and acting but this was very well done in my book. Great job Sunny Thompson, and thank for the autograph!

Thinking About Going Old OLD school

I wanted to change my hairstyle (but keep it black, I feel it suits me and my skin tone) and tweak my look a little bit this year. I was watching Bram Stokers Dracula and started falling in love with Mina's look. The long yet styled black hair and the dark passionate red dress she wears is full of mystery. But when you have a mysterious side you also need a bubbly side so I liked Marie Antoinette's Pink and Light Blues. So I would love to balance the two. I was thinking more lacey outfits and victorian looking clothes, I can't go full 18th century or 17th century because I don't know how I will get into a car haha. But I want to try it out modern in a few months so my hair can grow longer because I usually go for the Monroe look. Here are some pictures I collected for inspiration...

New Love...

Tweed jackets, trousers, and gaudy neckwear inspiration Coco Chanel...I bought 5 trousers which was a huge step for me because pants and I have a love hate relationship. I am 5'1 so it is hard to find a pant that fits, flatters, and doesn't drag on the ground. I have been struggling to find a way to wear trousers that wont make me look older yet not to lose the vintage feel. I have also been struggling with how to keep warm without a lot of layers or thinking just a cardigan with do with the morning chill. A blazer or a tweed jacket has that touch because you can also take it off. Although tights are thick and great I don't have the 20 mins extra to squeeze in them when I step out so a trouser does just fine. Pant suits also help around the office for the file thats always in the back or on the ground! I also find a layered pearl necklace gives it that extra vintage kick when a pant suit might look too masculine.

Stopped by BarnesandNoble.com and found the 1950's Playboy Cover to Cover Issue. It includes a replica Marilyn Monroe Playboy , 224 page book, and a whole digital archive of all the Playboy Magazine issues page by page in the 1950's. I have been wanting this forever but the price was out of my league for something like this. Originally 100 bucks the price got knocked down to 20.00! Moving On Up!

I will be moving into a new place April 1st and this time i'm going to do it right! I started thrifting and shopping for my home. I got a new coffee table, retro end table, 2 sets of vintage/retro dishes, retro glasses, vintage salt shakers, retro inspired couch and chairs from target, Marilyn Monroe wall decoration from target, red pots and pans from target, vintage scale, vintage serving tray, table cloths, napkin rings, vintage lamps, etc. I will be taking pictures when I have everything set up. I still want to get silverware and pillows. I will most certainly keep everyone posted!!!

Flea Market Finds and Thrift Finds!

It's been a little while since posting. Things have been busy for me. Although on a side note I did go to Hollywood Video and picked up a bunch of classics for sale because they were closing. The titles I bought includes: The Big Sleep, The Killing, Roman Holiday, My Fair Lady, Dracula, All The Thin Mans (except one!), North By Northwest, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, An American In Paris, and on the non-vintage side Revolutionary Road. At very good deals, it is not everyday you see them for sale at a local store, cheap even!

Anywho! Here are some of the finds at the local flea market...

The gloves were a dollar a pair. The clip-ons were a buck each. The bracelets aren't vintage but I thought they would look nice with a thirties silk dress. The bottom row of the second picture I thought those were earrings without a pair. They were a quarter each but I looked closer and they were rings so I bought all they had.

Thrift Finds...

I loved the cute apple brooch because I love Snow White. The earrings that look soo Carmen Miranda keep on getting loose so I have to keep taking the pliers to it. But it will be worth it one of these days I find to look very kitchy. The pearl bracelet with a C on it doesn't start with my name but my last name it does and also my puppies name, so I bought it.

Dress fits great and it was three dollars! Everyone needs a little yellow in their life!

Flea Market Finds and New Bed Spread

I'm starting to see a trend with the things I buy lately to be brown and gold. I have no idea why.

I got a second jewelry box because my (as you know) was spilling over. So as luck would have it I found a decent sized one at $2.00! What a find that was. The two pins I found was a couple dollars each. The Screen Legends playing cards were cute. And the mirror were a few dollars, I put my Chanel lotion in the spray bottle. It came in handy!

I also picked up a Lucy and Ricky movie set. For $20.00 I got all the movies they have ever done together, still in plastic. I thought it was a good deal since this isn't something I see at Best Buy every day.

Continuing with the brown and gold theme I got a new bed spread! I just love it my new puppy Clara Bow fits right in! The angle with the camera was off but you get the jest of it...

I found a couple things I spent a little more money on for myself around this holiday season.

My first bottle of CHANEL (N. 5)!!!
I love it and it also came with body wash and lotion...classic.

I also got yesterday the rerelease of the 1959 Barbie. She comes with the extra gown and of course the classic striped bathing suit and glasses. It has a little poster, fact cards, and a repo-ed magazine. The magazine is worth taking a peek at it shows themed outfits from the decade. If you can squeeze it out of the box. So adorably worth buying.

When I can't do thing with my hair I don't usually wear a snood. I usually go for a pony tail with a scarf bow tied around it.

Sometimes I tie them in a knot.

And sometimes I tie them on my purse.

I think they add extra to an outfit and they can conform to any outfit. :) LOVE EM!

I have way too many brooches and earrings and they are starting to pile up. I never thought I would have something as pretty as brooches pile up! But I have been watching a lot of Lucy lately because I got the I Love Lucy box set. She has the most cutest outfits ever. I have been inspired by her. She almost always has beautiful jewels on and even when she goes casual she has the cutest flats paired with a sparkly robe. So chic! When I stare through the glass counter I get so excited. Then to see how much they are priced I go crazy. It seems there is always a way to look expensive without being expensive. All the glamour of dresses and makeup were everyday things in yesturyear. But today it might look too gawdy...I say be glamourous! Its every womans right!

June 1st! Marilyn Monroe's B-day!

Since I was in Minnesota on her B-day I wasn't expecting to do much but watch Niagara. So I went to the mall and I was glad I did. The first store I passed by had a bunch of Marilyn purses. I eneded up getting one of course but one that I liked. I am very picky about the pictures they choose for there purses. There is only some many rinestones or Seven Year Itch pictures I can handle. But I was happy with my purchase.

I went into Barnes and Noble and went into the discount section and found 2 Marilyn books that I didn't own! Very good day and one of them just came out recently called Marilyn Montoe treasures, which is a great book to own. The other is also a book I loved which was a pretty picture book that I read in a day. Also when I came home from my trip my Jane Russell autograph finally came in the mail! I mailed her a while ago and finally got it.

I also found a pinup book and a fictional book that caught my interest. The pinup book though was a very handy size and very colorful, Bettie Page was very noticable!

Minnesota Trip Thrift!

I recently came back from a trip to Minnesota. So, I just had to look at the local thrift stores. I was just dissapointed that the trendy authentic vintage store was no longer there.

First off I got these hats at 4 bucks each. Which is not bad considering some of the prices on eBay. They are all in good-great shape!

These earrings I got for 1 dollar each! I just love dangle hoops and they are a little hard to come by. The pink and brown leaf earrings are very nice because they curl along your ear! Very chic and I was so excited to find them. The brooch I got from eBay because I lost the purple fushia flower brooch I had before, so I felt a little plain without it. :( Its kinda sick I know but I love looking top notch.

The scarfs I got for .50 and .75 cents. The gloves I got for $2.00 I just love gloves when I get a chance to wear them, I don't have a black pair so my mission is to find some...for a good price.

Vintage stockings! I do wear thigh highs for certain occasions but I have to get the right size and durable kind. They were a quarter each and even though I might not wear them or fit into them it is a nice thing to look at and own.

This outfit was $6.50 and it looks a little hot for Florida weather but in Minnesota it can be perfect. I can just picture drinking hot cocoa in a lodge, looking like a winter Norma Jean.

This was very cute to come by. It is vintage as well and a little thick, which is what I wanted. I do not have a lot of thick wool like dresses so I was fortunate. In the January or December months this can come in handy!

Another sleep robe/cover up I know but it was so darhling. It was a couple bucks and so light and pretty. The only thing I had to fix was the button hole lining and I did and it was worth it.

I bought this black slip for a couple bucks, I also got another black slip at another store because I didn't have any. Some of the prices for black slips now a days are sooo expensive. After I saw the white sleep robe/cover up I found this cute little silk cover up and thought why not pair it with the slip and wear it to bed occasionally? So I did last night and it was fab. I just love the little rose detail. Remember Montgomary Ward? Thats were I got the red cover up from. My how things have changed.

Nighties!!

Here are most of my nighties! The pink robe I just found at the thrift store for $2.00 with the orginal tags along with the red one. The others is a combination from thriting and eBay. I pretty much wear these to bed all the time. I find them very comfortable actually. I just wear a slip underneath and a robe when I walk around the living room, etc. Just like I said before no eating in bed when i'm wearing my nighty! ;)

So I went to the local Salvation Army and found a Marilyn section. My eyes got big and plopped right down on the floor and started shuffling through. Some I already had and most I didn't. I threw down $75.00 but it was worth it. Apparently they had a donation 6 months ago from a family whose father (I belive) was a Marilyn fan. They said there also used to be big cut-outs but it sold fast. I snapped my fingers but I was greatful to get something. But I was also sad that a Marilyn fan passed. At least I know his books are going to a good home!

Not much but I will be posting more thrifted items!

I have been trying to get my vintage looks more put together. More matching, more glamourous, sophisticated, and classy. This means more cluthes, jewelry, and brooches. When I would find a dress in my closet I wouldn't find a matching brooch or earring or clutch. So, I've stocking up collecting more you could say. I find these go a long way. I picked up some clutches I have yet to post and more. So come back later on.

I have a couple peach outfits and the rose earrings would go perfect. I also have a polka dot orange summer dress. And the same dress but in green so this would work. Black is black. It's basic and chic so I had to pick up some black earrings. The pic doesn't show it but it has cuts in it that when the light hits it it has a little sparkle.

My old silver brooch broke so I went out to buy a new silver one. Very sharp and sleek and it was worth the $4.00. I would wear it with a black pencil skirt or dress.

Here are some items I always meant to post but didn't get around to doing so.

I got these adorable glass bowls to use in my bathroom. I keep cotton balls in the one with the lid. I keep the girls on the ends of my bathroom countertop with a flower in each of their hands. The only thing is I get so nervous when I fall in love with a breakable find, its not like I can get a new one around the corner. But I guess it would be an excuse to go thrifting again....

Newly Thrifted

So I went out little by little over the past weekends and had some great finds!

I found some dresses. They are not vintage but vintage inspired but I still loved them. The only thing is I have to always hem them. I may be 23 but I am only 5'1 and if I don't hem them I look shorter than I am... About the yellow dress I had to do a little more work on it than I hoped. When I put it on the sleeves where too much yellow even for me. Believe me I am all about color but I had to chop those suckers off! It made my chest look sooo much wider than it was so I decided to cut them off and just wear a half sleeve black shirt under it. Also a button was missing but since I hemmed it about 9 inches I just took the button from the bottom and sewed it to the top. :) Worked well! I also always wanted a flannel print dress I wear with off white wedges.

The picture of these nightgowns do not do them justice. I got the yellow one off eBay and the purple one thrifting. I went/am still going through a nightgown phase. I still have more from the past I have yet to post. I was thinking if I dress vintage/inspired for most of the day why not the night? I really feel truly elegant. Just no food in bed when I'm elegant! haha

My bed! I thrifted the blanket, the knit, and the bunny pillow. I bought the sheets and pillow cases to match and it was worth it. I think it looks great. The Blanket was $5.00, the knit was $3.00 and the pillow was $1.00. I am very partial to rabbits because I have 2 of my own. :)

The Ava Gardner book, The MGM and the Love Goddesses books I got at the used book store. They are lovely and I refer to them all the time to get my vintage look and attitude going! Mmm Hmm And the Dita Von Teese Book I got for X-mas is just faboulous! I refer to it all the time, more so the burlesque side than the fetish side but is much apperciated all the same. Nice tips for make-up from victoria times to the 50's. Also has a nice education of burlesque and Dita along the way. Which Inspired me to buy the book in the next pic. The one on the top is a pictorial history of burlesque and the one under that is about Ziefeld Follies. I am about halfway through the Burlesque book, very very interesting. I got the little clutch purse thrifting for a $1.00! And the Katherine Hepburn movie at the dollar tree for 53 cents! I havent watched it yet but for 53 cents I'll just hang on to it.

Bettie Page Passed Away

I got the news that Bettie Page has just passed away. I am so sad about this. She had just got over pneumonia and then suffered a heart attack. She was such an icon and a great lady. I'm speechless, I just hope she's resting in peace.

Movie Magic

I am started a new blog addition called Movie Magic. I will talk about the old Hollywood movies I watched in the past weeks.

The first movie I watched recently was Rebecca. I really enjoyed this movie. I am not suprised Alfred Hitchcock had a hand in this. It kept me very much into the whole story. Being a fan of noirs I was naturally attracted to the plot. It is one of those movies that you definatly have to wacth until the end.

Another movie was Cat On A Hot Tin Roof. It seems like when the names Elia Kazan and Tennesse Williams appear you know it's going to be good. I am a fan of A Streetcar Named Desire so I wanted very much to watch this film and I wasn't dissapointed. It's very much a strong story and Paul Newman carried this so well. Elizabeth Talylor's character is so believable. It is also one of those characters you learn to love towards the end of the movie. The overall set and environment is very suitable and comforting.

Father of the Bride... A comical film that you can some how relate to. Subtle funny and not too over the top yet very heartwarming. Having seen the remake with Steve Martin I noticed a lot of references and nods to the orginal. Elizabeth seems so young and fresh in this.

The Bad and the Beautiful takes a great behind the scence look of movie star drama. Lana Turner is just supurburb. The story just seems to keep going and not stop. Agencies, directors, money issues are all what creates fame, fortune, and misfortune. The inner working of movie politics are what drives the characters back to what they left. Was it Kirk Douglas's character that made them all? Or is it fate? Or desperation?

Gilda! Wow! I thought Rita Hayworth lit up the screen. I think if Rita wasn't in this movie the movie wouldn't have taken the great direction that it did. She had a little sass to her which I took to. And talk about drama. Gilda was just a caged tigeresse trying to break free and I'm glad she did!

New Finds

Hey everyone! I know its been a while and its a little embarassing actually. So I went thrifting and picked up a few things. I also headed over to eBay and picked up a few books. Then I went over to TCM.com and subscribed to their magazine which I will scan the once I get them. But for know i'll show what I got...

New electrical typewriter I bought for $15.00 and it works. The price was high but it worked and it came with a great looking case. I put my vintage book on top as well as the owls I found. I thought it would be a nice touch!

Manual typewriter. I had to get one that didn't use electricity. I am a writer and I thought it would be a great idea to get one when ideas just pop out. I have Sweet Slumber on Barnes and Noble.com as well as Amazon. I am in the process of writing a novel so I got inspired a little by this typewriter. Anyway, I was on the search for a manual for sometime. I called this thriftstore to ask if they had any they said no. By fluke I ended up going and I found one. Which kinda bothered me because I called just a couple days before and they said no. I found it way in the back in a case covered and next to a electric. The manual had no price on it. So I took it up to the counter at first they didn't want to sell it to me because it had no price then another woman persuaded her to give me a price. All I had was $15.00 dollars of money left in my account, I was willing to pay $10.00. She said $25.00 so I couldn't afford it. Then I remembered the lady that set the price always priced everything too high. I came in one day and she told me that the doll she was holding was worth $50.00, which is fine but it was a brand new cabbage patch doll. Very hard to believe a toy made in the 80's that is brand new is worth that much. I bought those gold owls there she said these are worth like $50 each and a folower tin she said was worth $100. I don't think so. So I returned the typewriter where I got it. Then I saw that the one next to it was only $8.99, they were busy and I didn't notice it until I was leaving. So a few days later I came back to see if it had an offical price on it. It didn't but the same lady wasn't working there that day so I was hoping it would be priced down I talked to the other lady I hadn't seen and I showed it to her. I asked her if she priced things she said sometimes so she said they look like the same thing so she priced it $8.99! I was so happy so I bought it and was very happy. The ribbon itself is in good shape to, I suppose if I have to I will get more ribbion on eBay, I have seen them there.

My pins, I bought a couple of new pins but I though I'd show all the one's I have so far. The red flower is new as well as the two below it. I usually find a good deal on them, plus I wear them so why not keep buyin them cheap.

Nancy Drew! So I have been deciding should I get into Nancy or not. I finally decided sure. I went to the used book store they charged $6.00 a book. I went to eBay first to see if I could find a deal. I decided to get the vintage ones, if not the orginals from the 30's than the ones from the 50's would probably be easier. I also wanted to get the first one at least so I can start with knowing about the first volume. So I did find a deal on eBay. I got 4 for $7.00 including shipping! So it was a great deal and it came with vol. 1 and 2.

New bios! I collect biographies of classic Hollywood so I picked up some more for cheap. I have a lot of books though. My draws are filled with them, I can't stop and I don't like renting them in fear of not returning them in time so I just buy them. Usually opt for used books because they are cheaper. Then trade ones I no longer want in for credit towards new ones. But here are the bios I picked up: Liz by C. David Heymann, Lauren Bacall Now by Lauren Bacall (I have her first one) her second auto bio, A Woman Named Jackie by C. David Heymann, It's All In The Playing by Shirley Maclaine (I also have another one of hers, she has 5 total), Grace A Love Story by George Burns, Maria Callas by Simon and Schuster, and Mommie Dearest by Christina Crawford-i'm nervous about reading this one I think Joan is a great actress it is just hard to read harsh personally things about her motherhood life.

Flea Market & Thrifting Trip

So I finally decided to try again at the flea market. I'm so glad I did! First off I saw a late 50's early 60's record player. I have one already but it is a new one and the last time I oredered a vintage one on Ebay it wasn't great so I sent it back, and that cost me $60.00 and a bidding war. So I figured if I find one I'll find one. The record player I found was only $5.00! It has four speeds. It works and has the orginal needle it just needed a little screw tightning. And the best thing, the volume works! Thats always a problem if not that the needle is gone so i'm very happy! :)

The other thing is the Marilyn Monroe Jack-In-The-Box. I am a big Marilyn fan and when I saw this I have to be honest, I thought it was a little cheesy and cheap. I know a lot of company's now or in the 70's made a lot of Marilyn merchandise so this didn't stand out. So I went home and my bf told me just to look it up, so I did and it turns out this was worth $300.00+ I mean WOW! Then I thought well maybe its not that bad looking after all haha. It is worth that much not because the head is porcelin but there was only 10,000 made. So my bf said YOU BETTER GET IT! I had $20.00 left over just enough to go get it, the jack in the box is $18.00. So I get there and my bf is running around try to find the booth, I didn't even know if they were still there, so long story short we find it. My bf runs to the booth grabs it and brings it to me, ummmm hello!!!! The sellers look at him like he's crazy and that he's stealng it. But they saw me walking towards them with it. I paid and on the way to the car I said geeze you just grabbed it! He says I saw an old lady looking at it so I had to get it. Haha soo that was an intresting morning.

The records I got - Ray Charles- Glen Miller- Beethoven- And Music Greats

I thrifted the records and finally found a Ray Charles record that wasn't broken or not even in the sleeve. Also I wanted to get into classical music but I didn't know where to start so I just picked up the Music Greats Set I saw and another Beethoven. I also have a lot of jazz records so I threw a Glenn Miller in there.

So I didn't find too much, but I did find some more records. I think I have an unhealthy addiction to records or something. I mean I don't buy all the Ray Coniff records I see or Polka Parties, if I did I would need more shelves! I do though buy some of my favorites like blues, jazz, and motown. I'm just glad records don't cost a whole lot. I do have a problem with Goodwills prices, they are a toe over to high. I bouhgt 6 records for almost $7.00. While I went to the other local thrift store I got 12 records for $2.50. I mean come on it is not like there is a high demand for records. It is cheap in general but this happens everytime I go to Goodwill I spend like $50.00 on just 5 or 6 items in the store. It doesn't even make up for the stamp card they give me. Anyway! Here are pics of the things I picked up.

New Dresser

I noticed this dresser and the price was great so I got it. I hated dragging it up to my third floor condo. However, through the sweat and bitching it made it and it looks good. Also an old BINGO card popped out! So I guess that was the dressers consilation prize for carrying it up flights of stairs in Florida...

Tea Tin

I haven't been on the tea tin collecting scene so I know not to much about them. I know this one was made in New York, NY by the Seeman Brothers Inc. It can date back as early as 1901 so I am holding on tight to this one until I know for sure. I'm hoping it is very old, plus I got it for $2.00! Another bargin!!! :)

New Punch Bowl

So I finally caved and got my first punch bowl. I researched it and found out it is a Vintage Graped Anchor Hocking Punch Bowl. It is from the 50's and it was only $7.99! I took it home knowing nothing about it, figuring it was new, but I always wanted one for get together's and just said what the hell!! So, i'm happy!

There movie selection was huge. It was neatly organized which was a suprised to me, even in alphabetacle order!

They had some cute shoes but way over priced.

So, today I went to a Goodwill I never been to before. There secletions were big but nothing really vintage. It was mostly new things and many copies of one item. There prices were high especially for what item was being sold. So I pretty much left empty handed. :(

Booklet - I bought this booklet in a local thift store for 15 cents. Published in 1945 it talks about the different types of aprons from men to women and has there patterns drawn in the booklet. There are so many types and different ways to tie them. It looks very handy.

So today will be my first post on my new blog! I went thrifting yesturday and the day before so instead of posting what I bought all at once I thought I would break it up. I will also be posting little articles and pictures from my vintage books and mags here and there. :)
